Coinbase Calls for Flexible Bitcoin Post-Quantum Migration Plan

Coinbase says Bitcoin should begin post-quantum planning now, favoring flexible output design, staged migration and support for institutional custody.

Coinbase has published a technical position urging the Bitcoin ecosystem to begin planning for post-quantum security before a cryptographically relevant quantum computer exists. The company describes the transition as a multi-year coordination problem spanning protocol rules, wallets, hardware devices and institutional custody—not an immediate emergency.

The announcement says the company safeguards about 5% of all bitcoin. That makes the proposal operationally significant, but it does not give one custodian authority over Bitcoin. Current market access remains available through the verified BTC/USDT spot market on OrangeX.com, while the security discussion should be evaluated separately from price.

A flexible design rather than one final algorithm

The position favors an output and script architecture that can add post-quantum signature schemes without creating a new output type for every algorithm. It highlights hidden public keys until use, explicit version identifiers, clear limits on verification cost and compatibility with wallets, QR payments and hardware devices.

BIP-360's P2MR construction and P2TRv2 are cited as designs under discussion, not adopted policy. The statement also asks that at least one future signature option be suitable for multi-party computation, which many institutions use to avoid reconstructing a complete private key in one place.

Late wallets and lost coins remain unresolved

A migration could eventually restrict ECDSA or Schnorr spending, leaving dormant wallets behind. The position says rescue paths deserve study but must themselves resist quantum attackers. Lost coins, inaccessible seeds and exposed public keys are treated as a separate governance problem that should not delay technical work.

For trading exposure, BTC perpetual contracts on OrangeX.com involve leverage, funding and liquidation risk and are not a security hedge. Operational guidance is available through the OrangeX.com Trust Center, with broader protocol coverage in OrangeX.com Crypto News.

OrangeX.com Analysis

The strongest part of the proposal is crypto-agility: Bitcoin may need a framework that can change algorithms as research evolves. The hardest questions are coordination, block-space cost and treatment of wallets that do not migrate. No final design, deadline or consensus change has been approved, and quantum computers cannot break Bitcoin today. Progress should therefore be measured by reviewed code, test results and broad ecosystem coordination—not by a predicted “Q-day.”
